The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government scheme that has provided an essential thing that people with disabilities require for empowerment – flexibility of choosing. It is structured so that it helps a person participate more in the community and become more independent.
All these aspects help a person with a disability gain control over the services they receive from the service providers. There are various services provided by the network of this essential support system, such as NDIS meal providers, community care services, health and education aid, transportation services, et cetera.
NDIS will fund the following:
It covers all reasonable and necessary aid that is required to meet the goals of disabled individuals. Depending upon the goals of an individual, funding will include the following:
Core funding: It is about the funding of basic essential needs required in daily lives. It effectively covers funding for participation and access to community activities.
Capital funding: It includes funding related to purchasing items that help provide support for the disability. So it includes buying types of equipment, technology or doing modifications required.
Capacity funding: It includes funding related to supporting recreational activities. It also focuses on training individuals for building their skills, provides employment, and improve their overall health wellbeing.
NDIS will not fund the following:
An individual’s NDIS plan will not include support for quite a few things. Firstly, anything not related to a person’s disability will not be covered. Moreover, diverse funding for help cannot be clubbed under one plan. Secondly, anything related to day-to-day living expenses not explicitly associated with the disability needs will also not be covered. Moreover, any other support delivered more effectively by another system will also not be covered. For example, healthcare services or educational assistance will not be covered by NDIS.
NDIS services included under the scheme
NDIS, in collaboration with various service providers, provides a wide array of services for people with a disability:
Personal care
These services are related to the daily tasks of an individual. It includes assistance in many jobs such as showering, personal grooming, toileting, changing dresses, etc. These are core support activities and come in the ‘core funding’ of an NDIS plan.
Meal services
NDIS assists in preparing meals, cooking, buying groceries from local stores, et cetera. There are NDIS meal providers who deliver meals to one’s doorstep with ease. The service providers cook meals, but they also teach how to cook as well.
Transport assistance
If a person’s goal is to travel independently and use public transport as a means of conveyance, then various NDIS affiliated service providers assist in travelling. Funding may include paying for the transport or a support worker accompanying the disabled person.
Education
Education is required primarily to become independent. NDIS assistance does not include paying for education. The educational system of Australia covers it. NDIS provides services with travelling for classes, studying, taking notes, et cetera. Education helps in finding employment and assists a person in contributing to society.
Therapies
Being disabled and not living a life like any average person takes a toll on the mental health of many individuals. Thus, physiotherapy and occupational therapy are essential parts of NDIS plans. Such therapies focus on improving the motor functions of individuals so that they can improve their current standards of living. It helps them to increase their confidence and ultimately improve their mental health.
The NDIS is a welcome move for the people of Australia as it improves many areas of support that were not covered under the Disability Support System (DSP). It has a wide range of services that gives an individual the power to be a contributing member of society and live a life filled with values.
