Six Tips for Designing a User-Friendly Website

James Barnes July 29, 2024 Digital Marketing  Leave a Comment

Visiting a website can often be the first interaction that a potential customer has with an organisation. First impressions count. So, how can you make your website as user-friendly as possible?

  1. Ensure performance is optimisedA slow-loading website is an instant turnoff for many. Key steps you can take to combat this include compressing visuals, minimise HTTP requests, using CSS sprites, and caching and CDNs.

    2. Easy navigation

A clear, logical navigation structure is crucial. There should always be a visible menu, groups of related pages should be kept together, and descriptive labels should give clear indications as to what is on each page. Consistency is key – as is accessibility.

  1. Keep content relevant and avoid clutterUtilise headings, subheadings, bullet points and numbered lists – and use bold or italics to highlight important information. Keep language clear and avoid jargon. When it comes to visuals, make sure that they serve a purpose.

If you would rather leave it to the experts, there are a number of agencies specialising in web design Surrey and the surrounding areas, such as akikodesign.com/design/web-and-digital , that have useful online resources for your perusal.

    4. Design for all devices

More people in the UK now access websites on mobile devices than on desktops or tablets.

So, opt for a mobile-first design approach. Utilise white space to improve readability and help focus attention on critical elements. Use colours and fonts that are accessible and look good.

5. Have clear calls to action

Any calls to action should be clear and understandable. CTA buttons should be noticeable and easy to click, and the words should be action-focused. CTAs should be placed at relevant points of the user journey and near your most compelling content.

6. Use menus and links effectively

Both of these are crucial when it comes to navigation. Links should be used sparingly so as not to overwhelm users (but note that internal linking aids navigation). Dropdown menus, sidebar menus and mega menus are all popular options.
