How The Waste Is Costed In Quotations For Small Builders – Skip hire

James Barnes March 13, 2026 Renovation Leave a Comment

By pricing waste removal properly you are managing to protect your margin and help clients understand what they are paying for. Skip hire is cost-effective for small builders as a rule – just remember to include it in your quote, otherwise you can end up losing out. For Skip Hire Norfolk, visit https://www.kentskips.com/

Step 1: link the skip to the job so it matches

List what you will produce

Mixed light bulky waste (packaging, timber, old units)

Heavy waste (rubble, soil, tiles)

Restricted items (plasterboard, tyres, paint)

Heavy waste comes by weight, so a skip can fill long before it fills with volume and then you might need an additional early collection or lighter smaller “heavy” skips.

Step 2: Create costings

Include:

Skip hire delivery plus collection cost

Road legal – Permit cost if required

Uplift can be “wait and load” if access is tight

Overweight fee – Rubble jobs are always overweight!!

Local time to load and cleanup onsite.

However, as a fast rule – if you are in doubt, price for one size larger or an additional bin.

Step 3: Quote it clearly (save yourself from embarrassment)

Your clients are not a fan of surprises, so why surprise them when it comes to waste as well?

Skip hire plus disposal

Permit (if required)

Remember that extra charges apply on restricted items and overfilled skips.

Step 4: Reduce risk

Request photos beforehand and question your client what they want to put in the trash. It ends any confusion.
