Causes of snoring

There are several reasons why snoring can occur and it does not necessarily have to be related to any problem in the respiratory tract, it also has to do with our daily habits. Possible causes of snoring are:

Being overweight is one of the main causes since excess tissue presses on the airways.

Nasal congestion: either from colds, sinusitis or allergies that prevent us from breathing properly.

Large tonsils: these hinder the passage of air, causing vibrations to occur when it circulates, resulting in snoring.

Alcohol and tobacco: some people can snore only when they consume some of these substances or if they are under treatment with a drug. These relax the throat muscles and make it difficult for air to pass through.

Nasal polyps: These are masses found in the paranasal sinuses and appear due to prolonged irritation or inflammation of the nose due to asthma, allergies or other infections. Depending on their size they can block the airways and make you snore.

Muscle tone: Loss of muscle tone, especially in the neck and mouth, caused by being overweight or aging, can cause snoring.

Swelling of the palate or uvula: These disorders can make these areas longer, making it difficult for air to pass through.

Healthy habitsHome remedies to stop snoring

A change in bedtime habits and regarding your diet in case of obesity will be essential to stop snoring, here are some healthy habits to stop snoring :

Sleep on your side: the face-up position causes the tongue and palate to go behind the throat, obstructing the passage of air. A home remedy to stay on your side while you sleep is to sew a small ball on the back of your pajama when you try to lie on your back, the discomfort will lead you to sleep on your side again.

Use more pillows: The idea is to keep the air duct open and avoid snoring. Put extra pillows on your neck and head.

Quit smoking: This habit inflames and irritates the airways, increasing the risk of airway obstruction.

Lose weight: if you suffer from obesity it is recommended that you visit a nutritionist so that they can guide you in eating a healthy diet, this will not only help you stop snoring, but will also improve your quality of life.

Relieves acidity: this allows your breathing to be noisy and can produce snoring since it interferes with the passage of air. If you want more information on how to treat heartburn, we recommend the article Home Remedies for Heartburn.

Make a nettle tea with 2 tablespoons of dried leaves and 1 liter of water, drink it before meals.

Peppermint or peppermint: this plant will help you with snoring that is related to respiratory conditions since it provides softening properties to reduce the symptoms that accompany many of these diseases such as asthma or pharyngitis. You can use it in several ways, make an infusion with a teaspoon of dry mint and drink 2 cups a day, or gargle before going to sleep by adding a drop of peppermint essential oil to a glass of water. Don’t swallow the water.
