How frequently should you test your smoke alarms?

James Barnes December 15, 2025 Devices Leave a Comment

Your fire alarms are both by far the most valuable items for your safety, and something that would fail you should it not work as intended. However, the easiest thing you can do is to test your smoke alarms on a regular basis.

Why Testing Matters:

A malfunctioning fire alarm is just as risky as having no alarm at all. There may be dust clogging it, or the battery could have died from having a low charge over years and years of nearly never going off. What allows you to catch that essential early warning when it matters most – testing!

How Often Should You Test?

On a monthly basis, press the test button on each alarm to ensure that it is functioning correctly. If it doesn’t, disconnect the alarm and change either the batteries or replace the device all together. Change the batteries as soon it starts beeping for a low battery, and then annually. Certain modern alarms have sealed batteries with up to 10 years of battery life, but regular testing is still imperative.

After any change, you should always check your alarms if you have moved furniture, redecorated or after any power cuts, for example.

Don’t Forget Maintenance:

Dust around alarms every now and then to help them keep on ticking.

Replace all the batteries just about every 10 years or even quicker in the event that you have tested the device and the batteries are dead.

Set a Reminder:

Make a calendar with the event or get your phone to remind you of it, so that way you will not forget about this little monthly check.

Fire alarm testing takes a few seconds each month and can save lives so make it part of your routine in the home or at work.
