5 Problems a Pediatric Dental Specialist is Used to Handling

Good oral hygiene should begin at an early age. Parents need to understand the importance of their children’s dental health and take necessary steps and preventative measures to ensure their children’s primary teeth are healthy and free of decay and other dental diseases.

If your children experience dental problems, you should immediately take your kid to the dentist. Here are five problems a child dental specialist is used to handling.

  • Crowded Teeth

Crowded teeth refer to a dental condition where the teeth erupting in your child’s mouth are larger, and there is not enough space available in the jaws. Erupting teeth take the least path/direction of resistance. If there is not enough space to grow straight, they will turn to any side, rotate, overlap, and become crooked.

If you notice an abnormal alignment of teeth in your child’s mouth, you should take your kid to a child dental specialist for treatment. The dentist will fit braces in your child’s mouth to fix crowded teeth issues.

  • Jaw Growth Problems

Jaw growth continues until 16 in girls and 18 in boys. Children can experience various jaw growth problems due to genetics, reverse swallowing, prolonged thumb-sucking habits, and other reasons. Dental experts like the dentist from Fort Wayne mention by the age of three to five.

If you notice any such dental problems in your child, you should take your kid to a dental specialist. After a thorough analysis of the problem, the dental specialist may recommend interceptive orthodontic treatment that will help create facial symmetry.

  • Difficulty in Chewing or Biting

If you notice your child gags or coughs a lot during meals, your child might be experiencing difficulty in chewing or biting. In that case, you need to take your child to a dental specialist. Difficulty in chewing may lead to your kid’s disinterest in meals, and he may not eat properly, which will affect overall body growth.

The dentist will thoroughly analyze your child’s teeth and jaw bone and recommend the best treatment available. If the problem is due to crooked teeth, the dentist might recommend braces to correct the problem. Suppose the problem is a misaligned jaw or irregular jaw bone growth. In that case, the dentist may recommend some interceptive orthodontic treatment to eliminate the probability of surgery in the future.

  • Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking is a harmful habit in children, and you need to consider dental treatment for your child to dissuade the child from sucking the thumb. Active thumb sucking can cause damage to a child’s primary teeth, which will also hurt the eruption of permanent teeth.

Persistent thumb sucking can cause permanent teeth misalignment and affect the jaw’s shape and roof of the mouth. The dentist may recommend using a thumb-sucking appliance to break the persistent habit of thumb sucking in your child. The appliance is designed to prevent thumb placement in the mouth, and the dentist will keep the appliance until the habit is broken.

  • Tooth Eruption Problems

The primary teeth in children start falling by the age of four to five. By the age of six, permanent teeth start erupting in your child’s mouth. Some children face tooth eruption problems like baby teeth refusing to budge (do not fall), permanent teeth that never appear impacted teeth, or misplaced permanent teeth.

If you notice any dental problem mentioned above, take your child to a dental specialist at the earliest.

To sum up, these are five problems a kid dental specialist is used to handling.
