Winter care tips for carpets

James Barnes November 21, 2025 Interior Design Leave a Comment

Changing seasons means changing burdens on your carpets. In winter, the damper weather can be a particular risk, especially if you carry sleet, snow, and mud into the house on your shoes. You need to take steps to minimise the damage so your carpet stays in better condition for longer.

Prevention

The easiest way to protect your carpet is to prevent it from being exposed to potential contaminants. This means doormats both inside and outside external doors, where you can wipe your feet, and a firm policy on shoe removal for guests. Carpet runners or rugs can be used internally in high-traffic areas, such as internal doorways and staircases.

Another risk is the dry air caused by the use of central heating. This may contribute to a build-up of static electricity in your carpet, which in turn can be an attractant to dust. To prevent this, a humidifier can be used to retain moisture levels in the air.

Cleaning

Damp can quickly soak deep into your carpet, so pat dry any melting snow immediately with a dry cloth. Regular cleaning minimises the buildup of bad odours. For a deeper clean in the middle of the season, or for more stubborn marks, such as from de-icing salt, professional carpet cleaning Hereford by a company such as https://octokleen.co.uk may be the most effective choice.

There may be particular risks to your carpet in winter, but they are relatively easy to mitigate by protecting it from exposure to dirt and damp, by mopping up promptly, and by making use of professional cleaning services.
