What do frogs eat? If you are curious about this question then you’re in the right place.

On the planet, the most commonly found amphibian are frogs and this species comes in enormous numbers with a variety of colors and sizes. They are adapted to live in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. Unfortunately, frogs are decreasing day by day due to human bad activities.

Frogs are predators so they only eat moving things which means they feed the live insects only. Frogs eat a wide variety of insects which they usually found naturally in their local habitat.

What do frogs eat in the wild?

Frogs are generalist predators and opportunistic eaters. So, they eat almost everything that comes their way in the wild. Based on frog’s size it depends on what kind of foods they can eat.

Frogs’ life begins as tadpoles and to survive they eat algae and plant in the ponds where they are grown. While growing they start to eat small insects. Small frogs mainly eat small bugs whereas large frogs are capable of eating even other frogs or animals.

Note: Frogs do not eat dead insects or animals.

Depending on the environment and frogs’ size, below there is a food list that is commonly eaten by them in the wild:

  • Flies
  • Caterpillars
  • Crickets
  • Moths
  • Beetles
  • Worms
  • Locusts
  • Spiders
  • Fish
  • Mice
  • Butterflies
  • Others frogs

What do frogs eat in Captivity?

In captivity, a frog’s eating system is completely different from the wild ones and it’s because of the lack of obtaining a variety of bugs or insects.

Here is the common food list which frogs eaten in captivity.

  • Crickets
  • Mealworms
  • Waxworms
  • Fruit Flies
  • Brine Shrimp
  • Feeder Fish
  • Mice

All these can be found in the local pet stores. Try to buy the alive ones because it’s really hard to feed them dead ones.

What do frogs eat as pets?

Frogs can be an interesting and beautiful addition to your house but only if they are feed properly. Before you bring any frog as your pet, you should know first what frogs eat. Additionally, You need to recreate their natural environment because in the wild they eat foods from their surrounding natural environment. Try to maintain your pet frog diet close as possible to the wild frogs.

Luckily, as the frogs are opportunistic and omnivorous eaters feeding pet frogs is really easy. The diet of the frogs mostly consists of insects/ bugs or any other invertebrates. Below there is an ideal food list for them:

  • Mealworms
  • Bloodworms
  • Crickets
  • Grasshoppers
  • Caterpillars

You can find most of these in pet stores. Also while walking to your garden you can find bugs such as caterpillars, worms, etc which you can feed your frog.

How Much and When to Feed Pet Frog

The feeding amount and schedule for your pet frog are depended on its age, activity level, and species. Frogs can become obese like humans if they are being overeating. So, it’s really important to feed them the right amount to keep your pet frog fit and healthy.

At first, determine your pet frog’s age and species. If you have younger and high-energy frogs then feed them 2-3 times per day and for the larger and older frogs feed them every two days. Moreover, feed the adult frogs 5-7 crickets several times per week. To ensure proper nutrition include a mix of different gut-loaded insects for feeding your pet frog.

Well, I think now you know everything about what frogs eat. In the wild, frogs are carnivores. So, they eat insects, worms, mice, etc. On the other hand, the pet frogs eat crickets, brine shrimp, locusts, etc. Do not feed them human food, wild-caught bugs, food made for other species, or large food.
