5 ways to unblock a toilet

James Barnes January 20, 2026 Renovation Leave a Comment

A blocked toilet is one of those really annoying household problems. The good news is that most blockages can be cleared without specialist tools, but it’s important to avoid repeated flushing, so you don’t cause a flood. Here are five ways to unblock that toilet.

  • Use a plunger for quick pressure
  • Try hot water and washing-up liquid
  • Reach deeper with a toilet auger
  • Use baking soda and vinegar
  • Consider professional help if needed

Use a plunger for quick pressure

A plunger is the most effective starting point. Creating a tight seal over the outlet and using steady, controlled movements helps build pressure that can dislodge the blockage and get water moving again.

Try hot water and washing-up liquid

Hot water combined with a small amount of washing-up liquid can sort out lighter blockages. Pour carefully from waist height and give it some time before you try flushing again.

Reach deeper with a toilet auger

When blockages sit further down the pipe, a toilet auger can physically break up obstruction. Feeding the flexible cable gently helps avoid scratching the porcelain or damaging fittings.

Use baking soda and vinegar

This popular household method creates_ a fizzing reaction that may loosen debris stuck in the pipework. Allow the mixture to sit before attempting to flush to see whether the flow improves.

Consider professional help if needed

If the blockage is a stubborn one or keeps returning, it could mean there’s a deeper issue. In such cases, contacting some local help, like an emergency plumber Gloucester, for example, www.hprservicesltd.com/emergency-plumber-gloucester/, may be necessary.

With the right approach, most toilet blockages can be fixed yourself, and you can avoid any future problems by only flushing appropriate materials.
