What is psoriasis?

Etymologically, psoriasis comes from the Greek “psora”, whose meaning is itching. The dead cells found in the epidermis, which is the outer layer of the skin, are replaced by new cells. This process occurs approximately every 30 days.

However, when that renewal is accelerated more than the account occurs what is known as psoriasis. This causes redness in the skin or scales, which usually cause pain and itching, and can often even affect the nails.

  • Destruction of the nail that produces a dust like sawdust under the nail.
  • The fragility of the affected nails.

As the growth of the nails is usually slow, it is common to find people who are discouraged to see that the result of the treatment requires patience during the wait. The care of this type of psoriasis must be continued and supervised to avoid abandoning it.

5 natural remedies to fight psoriasis on the nails

The treatments of psoriasis in the nails are usually unsatisfactory and should be specifically oriented to cases in which there is a functional deterioration or considerably affect the aesthetic part.

However, there are a few natural alternatives that you can do from home to combat the effects of psoriasis on the nails:

1. Use creams with vitamin D

The vitamin D has anti-inflammatory properties and promotes healing of nails that are damaged. Therefore, creams or lotions containing this vitamin are the most recommended to treat nails with psoriasis.

What do you need?

  • A cream that contains vitamin D

What should you do?

  • Rub the ointment or vitamin D cream on the nail bed for about 5 minutes.
  • Apply the treatment between 2 and 3 times a day.
  • Also, it is advisable to consume foods that contain vitamin D, to help the healing process is also from the inside out.

2. Aloe vera

Aloe is a plant famous for its many medicinal properties. In addition, it is easy to get, so it is one of the most popular natural remedies and its use in the treatment of psoriasis is quite simple.

Thanks to its regenerative action that helps to heal and nourish damaged tissues allow repairing the nails deeply. Thus, it prevents its desquamation and provides relief and freshness.

  • 1 leaf of aloe

What should you do?

  • Spread the gel inside the leaf on the affected nails.
  • Leave on for about 30 minutes and wash the area.
  • We can also extract the sap from the leaf and apply it directly on the surface of the nails during the night.
  • Remember to wash the area in the morning.

3. The solution of Epsom salts

As a way to complement some of the conventional treatments used by doctors, a homemade alternative is a warm water bath with Epsom salts. This type of salts has very good healing effects to improve the appearance and health of the skin and nails, relieving itching and irritation.

What do you need?

  • 2 tablespoons of Epsom salts (30 g)
  • Water (amount needed)

What should you do?

  • Fill a container with warm water and add 2 tablespoons of Epsom salts.
  • Immerse the nails for 20 or 30 minutes.
  • Dry with a clean cloth and moisturize with a cream with vitamin D or a medicinal oil.

4. Arnica oil

This oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory functions. Thus, it helps to prevent affected nails from worsening their condition due to an infection caused by fungi or bacteria.

What do you need?

  • 1 cup olive oil (250 ml)
  • 2 cups of arnica flowers (200 g)

What should you do?

  • Mix the olive oil and arnica flowers in a bowl and let marinate in a dark place for a week or 10 days.
  • After the indicated time, strain and proceed to its use, applying it on the damaged nails.

5. Oatmeal

This cereal provides many depurative benefits as well as in the treatment of skin lesions. In the case of nails, it is also very effective because it is an excellent moisturizer that calms the itching and pain. This treatment with oats is very simple.

What do you need?

  • 2 tablespoons of oatmeal (30 g)
  • 1 cup of water (250 ml)

What should you do?

  • Add the oatmeal in a bowl with warm water and mix well.
  • Immerse hands or feet in the preparation for about 20 minutes.
  • You can also increase the amounts of oats and water and take a full bath with this mixture to improve the appearance of your skin.

Although there is not yet a definite known cure for psoriasis, there are a lot of treatments available on the market, as well as different, more natural recommendations that can help treat this condition. The most important thing, however, is to consult a specialist when symptoms such as those of this disease appear.

Prevention is always the priority and that is why natural remedies are the first lifesaver to turn to. These will provide us with relief and tranquility.
