Alzheimers Respite Care

According to the U.S. Alzheimer’s Association, more than 4 million Americans today are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Many families are suffering and have been left with the burden of caring for loved ones with this disease. The reason why special attention is needed is because of the complications that come with the disease. Such include memory loss, problems solving or planning things, issues with writing or speaking, poor judgment, mood changes, and a problem with doing familiar tasks. Individuals who take care of these people require taking a break and this is where respite care comes in. Keep reading to find out more about respite care and how it benefits both you and your loved one.

Giving care is a demanding task and people need taking breaks. Here are things to expect from respite care.

To the Caregiver

  • With you get a chance to spend more time with your family, friends or some alone time
  • You find peace of mind and comfort since you are assured that the person with Alzheimer’s is getting the attention they need.
  • You get enough time to run your errands like shopping, going to your doctor, going to the gym, getting your hair done, and more.

To the Person with Alzheimer’s Disease

With Alzheimer’s respite care at MACG, your loved one;

  • Spends time in a supportive and safe environment
  • Can socialize and interact with other people who have the same condition
  • Can participate in various activities that improve their health and way of living.
  • They also get palliative care, specialized care services, and even balanced diet meals.

You can get respite care at the comfort of your home or at a center that provides such services. When it comes to in-home services, there are several options you can choose from. Such include:

  • Personal care services like toileting, bathing, and exercising.
  • Companion services where the individual gets company and their activities are supervised.
  • Medical care services include helping with medication and other services.
  • Maid services that help in shopping, laundry, and meal preparation.

Residential facilities, on the other hand, offer services like overnight stay or few days stay. This provides the caregiver with ample time to spend on a vacation while their loved one is getting the support they need. In adult centers, the person with Alzheimer’s disease gets a safe environment with planned activities like art and music. They also get meals and transportation. Even if the person with Alzheimer’s may have a problem adjusting to the new place, they may get used with time if you schedule regular stays.

Common Concerns

If you are thinking of trying respite care, you may have some concerns like;

Cost. You may not know how much you will have to pay for these services but this should not worry you. There are several assistance programs that you can look into for help.

Guilt. You may feel guilty by thinking that you should have been there. However, asking for help does not mean you have failed. It means you care enough to provide enough help to your loved one.

In Conclusion

Respites require you, your loved one, and the caregiver to adjust to the new situations. The person who needs this care is important and you must know what you will get from respite. Have faith in the caregivers and take the time you need for that break. Look for the right personnel or service providers for support.
