  • A barge board is fitted to the end of a gabled roof. It is located just below the tiles, and it follows the roof slope up to the top ridge.

  • Battens are strips made of softer wood that are used for attaching plasterboard and roofing coverings. Roof tile battens are used to fix roof covering to rafters.
  • Cornice is the edge of the roof that projects outwards from the sides of the property.
  • The rows of tiles or slats that are horizontally laid across the roof are called courses.
  • Sheathing is the material to which the tiles or shingles will be applied. Decking is made of plywood, strand board or both.
  • Dormer: A dormer is an extension of the roof with walls and a roof surrounding a prominent window.
  • The Drip Edge is a metal strip that runs along the edge of the roof to allow water to drain away from the property.
  • Eaves – the eaves is the point where the bottom edges of the roof extend beyond the edge of the house structure.

  • Fascia is a board that covers the rafter portion of the eaves. The fascia is located behind the guttering, which is also called soffits.
  • Flashing is the term used to describe the metal sheets that are placed on the roof at different points to prevent leakage.
